“The Rebel Maid”
Pleasing Performance at Denaby
The concert version of the opera, “The Rebel Maid,” presented by Denaby Main Evening Choral Class in the Large Hall, Denaby, last (Thursday) night attracted a good audience.
Principals were Miss Elsie Foster (soprano), of the Victoria Hall, Sheffield, and Mr. Frank Skinner (tenor), of Sheffield. They delighted the audience with some really fine singing. Miss Foster’s clear voice carried splendidly. She excelled in “Sunshine and Laughter” at the opening. Mr. Skinner was successful as leader of the male singing. Honours, however, among the men went to a member of the choir, Mr. George Wolstenholme (bass), whose strong voice and accuracy in a number of difficult songs was very impressive.
Other members of the choir with principal parts were Mr. Albert Wood (tenor), Mr. Henry Tyas (bass), Mrs. Alice Cheswick (soprano), and Mrs. Ethel Richardson (contralto). Their voices carried well, and it was evident that they had been well rehearsed.
The chorus of 42 voices were always distinct and accurate in attack. The men sang with great spirit.
There was a full orchestra of 15 players, well led by Mr. H. Marshall. Pianist was Mrs. Rosa Sykes. Mrs. H. L. Chappell (Mexborough), who produced the show, was an efficient conductor.
