Theft by an Errand Boy at Conisbro’

Joseph Gledding, a youth lately employed as errand boy by Mr. H. J. Clarkson, confectioner, Conisbro’, was charged on Saturday at Doncaster with felony.

The prosecutor stated that last Thursday he noticed that the pockets of the boy were bulky, and he asked him what he had got. He replied, “My handkerchief.” Not being satisfied, he took the boy into the office and sent for Police-sergeant Ambler.

It was found that he had put four of his pockets filled with spice, the value of which was 1s. He said, “I was only taking them home for the children.”

In reply to the magistrates, the prosecutor said there was no objection to the employees eating one or two sweets on the premises, but they were never allowed to take sweets away.

A fine of 30s., including costs, was imposed.
