Theft of a Waistcoat

A married woman named Elizabeth Spencer, was charged with having stolen a waistcoat, the property of Jabez Atkinson, landlord of the south Yorkshire hotel, Mexborough.

It appears that on February 22 the prisoner was in the public house, and afterwards went into the backyard, where a vest was hanging on a clothes line.

She was apprehended in another public house shortly afterwards.

She said it was the first thing she had stolen in her life.

In reply to the bench Inspector Barrett said the prisoner had not been living with her husband for several years.

Sentenced to one months imprisonment.
