Three Months’ Imprisonment for Denaby Miners.
At the Doncaster, West Riding Court, yesterday, William Growgott, miner, Denaby, was charged with obtaining money by false pretences from the Ministry of Pensions, and Charles William Hesketh, miner, Denaby, was charged with aiding and abetting.
Mr. F. Allen, who appeared for the prosecution, said that Hesketh was a pensioner, and was obtaining grants on the ground of being unable to work. He was only charged in respect of one sum of £1 18s. bd., though as a matter of fact he had received £59 4s. 6d.
Growgott had been receiving the money from the Post Office under the representation that the wife was ill and unable to attend. The prisoners were each committed to prison for three months.
