To Help Unemployed

A conference has been held at the Conisboro’ Council Offices regarding the employment of additional labour by the Urban District Council, and this was attended by representatives of the Council, representatives of the National Unemployed Workers’ Movement, representatives of the Denaby Unemployed Social Club, representatives of other unemployed workers, and the manager of the Mexboro’ Labour Exchange.

It was pointed out that there were nearly 600 available registered unemployed workers. The Surveyor (Mr. H. Thirlwall) briefly outlined the proposed schemes of work, and stated that it was essential to keep within the estimated cost.

Statistics were submitted by the manager of the Mexboro’ Labour Exchange (Mr. Wilson) as to the duration of unemployment of men registered. It was decided to set up a Rota Committee for the recruitment of labour.

The Rota Committee consists of members of the Council (6), National Unemployed Workers’ Movement (2), Denaby Social Club (2), other unemployed workers (2), the last two to be nominated by the manager of the Labour Exchange, and the other two pairs by the movements concerned.

In the interim it was agreed that any additional men should be recruited from those persons who had been longest unemployed. It was agreed that up to four weeks’ work should be disregarded in arriving at the length of unemployment.
