To Prison At 80
An elderly man, named Robert Osborne, a labourer of no fixed abode, was charged with begging at Conisboro’ the previous day.
P.C. Daly said that at 3.20 the previous day he saw the prisoner in Church Street begging. When spoken to he said he had nowhere to go and he had no money.
He was taken into custody, and when searched he had in his possession 3s. 8d. in pennies and halfpennies. Prisoner was under the influence of drink at the time, and had used language to the people who refused to give him any money.
Prisoner said he was unable to work. Sergeant Hicken said prisoner had admitted to the sergeant that he had been convicted over 50 times.
The Chairman said they believed the prisoner was an old man at the game, and he would have to go to prison for seven days, and also would have to contribute the money found upon him for his maintenance.
The prisoner said, “My oath! Fancy sending an old man eighty years of age to prison!”
