Tom Hill Victors in Basketball Competition

Picture shows G. Walker of Denaby Tom Hill Youth Club putting the ball into the basket during the Inter Youth Clubs basketball competition at Mexborough Grammar School last Thursday.

Tom Hill Youth Club, Denaby, were convincing winners of the first ever Mexborough area youth basketball competition at Mexborough Grammar School last Thursday.

Four clubs took part in the knockout competition. Organised by the divisional youth subcommittee. They were Mexborough. Conisbrough and Denaby, Tom Hill and Swinton. Parkgate, who were also due to play failed to turn up

Games had to be kept down to 10 minutes each way, but the first one, between Conisbrough and Denaby Youth Club and Tom Hill was the best of the night. Tom Hill won 16 – 10

  1. Walker play a brilliant captain’s game for Tom Hill scoring 10 of their 16 points, and Southwell scored three great goals for a fast and skilful Tom Hill squad.

Bullcroft scored all 10 points for Conisbrough and Denaby but after a period of supremacy they failed to beat their near neighbours.

The game between Swinton and Mexborough lacked the fire and inspiration of the first but Spence played well for Swinton and Sadza for Mexborough.

The score was eight all when time was called but Mexborough won when the match was decided on penalties.

In the losers playoff the faster Conisbrough and Denaby side defeated the bigger Swinton 16 – 6 as snow began to fall outside. Despite the cold one of the Conisbrough squad was penalised by the referee, for removing his vest. It was so cold the referee himself had to resort to wearing gloves.

Tom Hill overwhelmed Mexborough in their final every member of the squad scoring in their 30-0 win.
