Tom Hill at First Time of Asking Win All Denaby Final

Memories of former Midland League days were revived at Hampden Road, Mexborough, on Monday, when nearly 3,000 fans saw the undefeated Tom Hill Youth Club coast to a handsome 4-1 victory over experienced rivals in Denaby Rovers (writes Alan Hill).

One of the largest crowds to witness a Montagu final for many years watched the Torn Hill club out-play their opponents in every ‘ phase of the game.

It was a case of football paying rich dividends, and tall, commanding inside forward, Flaherty, was an ace schemer in an enterprising attack.

After’ 20 minutes WATKIN weaved his way into the Denaby penalty box to put Tom Hill in the lead with a fierce cross-shot. Tom Hill, who had reached the final on their first appearance in the competition, went further ahead in the 43rd minute when leading goal scorer, STOCKWELL headed home from a corner. Prior to this Denaby Rovers came near to equalising when left winger Parker struck the bar with a flying header.

Confident Football

Playing smooth, confident football, Tom Hill continued to dominate after the interval, and favourites Denaby Rovers lost all cohesion as the half proceeded. Left winger DYSON, a tricky, dangerous raider, increased the Tom Hill lead in the 49th minute when he volleyed into the net after receiving a cross-field pass. The rout continued as MARSTON took advantage of a defensive mix-up’ to place his scoring shot past the floundering ‘keeper.

Appeals for a penalty by Tom Hill were denied by the referee when centre-forward Stockwell was sent sprawling in the “box.” In a late Denaby rally Parker headed against the bar and SAPEY scored a consolation goal in the closing minutes.

President of the Rockingham Cycling Club Mr. Bert Oliver, made the presentation amid scenes of jubilation. Torn Hill will also contest the Doncaster Senior Cup Final at Belle Vue, Doncaster, on April 14th when they are opposed to Briggs Sports.
