Took Wedding Ring Off.
At the Doncaster West Riding Court, on Saturday, John H. Cheetham, dataller, Denaby, was charged with persistent cruelty to his wife.
The parties were married at St. Philip’s, Sheffield, in 1908, and there are three children.
Complainant stated that from 1909 to 1912 there were frequent disturbances between them. Defendant joined the Army in 1914, being in the R.N.D., and when he returned home he became very violent and assaulted her on many occasions. On Saturday she went to Sheffield, and on the way home he assaulted her in the street. She alleged that he had threatened her with a revolver.
In cross-examination, she said her husband served at Gallipoli and in France, and was wounded in France. He had been awarded the Military Medal but, she said, “I don’t know how he got it.” She admitted taking her wedding ring off and saying, she – would not wear it again. She denied familiarity with another man,
The defence was a total denial of the allegations, and the case was dismissed.
