Conisbrough Man is Area Agent
Receiving the highest number of votes given to any candidate in the Yorkshire N.U.M. Area agent selection on Wednesday. Mr Abe Collins of 34, Prior road, Conisboough,,N.U.M. Delegates Denaby Main, colliery, has been elected agent for area “B” (Rotherham, Sheffield and Denaby districts).
A married man with four children Mr Collins received 7,103 votes.
Aged 42, Mr Collins started at Denaby Main colliery as a pony driver at 14, after leaving Boulder Street School. Since then he has worked as contractor, drift worker, colliery, workmen’s Inspector, and sub check weighman. He was workmen’s Inspector for just over 15 years and sub check weighman for 10 years. He became delegate in 1953.
For 15 years he has been a committee member of Denaby Main N.U.M branch, and for the past year he has been a member of the executive committee at Barnsley.
Mr Collins will take up his new role next month.
