Where Was The Third Man?
Elizabeth Burniston, the owner of a traction engine, living at Conisborough, was summoned for neglecting to have a proper number of men to attend to her engine.
The proper number is three, and when Police-constable Brown saw the engine at Bolton-on-Dearne, it only carried two.
Mr. Baddiley appeared for the defence, and stated that when the engine went out, it had the proper number of men with it. It went to Goldthrope, and on the way back, at Bolton, the engine got into a ditch, or in some way prevented from proceeding. One of the men was therefore sent back to fetch another engine to pull it out, and in the meantime, an engine came by and pulled them out.
They waited some time for the man to return, but he did not make his appearance, and they were obliged to go on without their proper number of men.
Mr. Baddiley said he thought it rather hard that his client should have been summoned for this offence, considering it was committed under such circumstances.
Fined 20s. including costs.
