Stoppage – Incident at Denaby Colliery – W.H. Chambers

A Trade Union Incident at Denaby Colliery.

To the Editor of the Yorkshire Post.

Sir,

As an illustration of the method of management and terrorism exercised by trades unions over their members, will you allow me to mention the following facts ;

Last Monday an accident occurred to the winding engine Denaby Colliery, necessitating the enforced idleness of the men there for about ten days.

A number of them, knowing that there was room, asked to be allowed work at our Cadeby Colliery, and permission was given them.

This morning the union officials met them on the way to their work, and insisted their returning home.

On the other hand, had the company closed portion of mine the union would have threatened to call out all the other men unless work was found somewhere for those displaced.

Yours faithfully,

W. H. Chambers, Director Manager.
