Traffic Manager Reminiscences

One of the colliery company’s oldest officers George Gregory, traffic manager at Denaby and Cadeby Collieries, who is approaching 70, was in reminiscent mood week.

He came to this district in when the sinking of the shafts had just been commenced. That was the time when men going to work were ferried over the river, for there was no bridge until a year later.

The bridge which was built at Denaby was taken down the river on barges for erection. At that time the portion between Old Conisborough and Denaby was green fields presenting a vastly different appearance from what it now does. Mr. Gregory commenced by attending to the sinking pump of No. 2 shaft, and then he wound bricks np No. 1 chimney. He assisted in making No 1 headgear and in erecting No. 1 winding drum. Later on he took No. 1 sinking engine down below and erected it as a haulage engine in No. 2 east.

He has worked under nine managers and remembers affectionately the great “W.H.” who made Denaby.
