A Tramp with Smallpox at Mexborough
Alarming Incident.
Last night a tramp who had entered Mexborough during the day, feeling ill, went to the assistant overseer (Mr Liversidge) for ticket for medical relief. The was granted, and the man made his way to the surgery of the medical officer (Dr Twigg).
Here he presented the note to the doctor’s wife, who was frightened at his appearance, and Dr. Huey (the medical officer’s assistant) came to him, and recognised the unmistakable symptoms of smallpox.
The man was immediately taken to the temporary hospital for infectious cases at Bull Green, which has been kept in readiness for patients since the outbreak at Denaby.
Dr: Twigg has the patient in hand, and so far he is going on well. The doctor is taking every precaution tor the prevention of the spread of the disease, and the Local Board held a meeting this afternoon to consider the advisability of takiog any special steps in the matter.
