Tried To Take Car.
Mischievous Youths From Conisbrough And Denaby.

Four youths, two from Conisbrough, and two from Denaby, appeared before magistrates at Doncaster Borough Court on Wednesday accused of attempting to take away a car without the owner’s consent.

They told the police in a statement “We were fed up and we were going to go to Scotland” – but not one of the four could drive.

The youths, Eric Gelder (17), of Balby Street, Denaby; Bernard Paling (17), of Edlington Street, Denaby; James Milliken (16), of Oak Road, Conisbrough; and William Deerin (16), of Chestnut Grove, Conisbrough, all pleaded guilty to the offence.

They were each fined £2, with £1 1s 3d costs each.

The chairman (Coun. A. Harvey):

There are too many young people like you causing mischief. We think this is a very serious offence, Milliken’s father told the magistrates that he didn’t think they were going to Scotland. “They hadn’t the price of a gallon of petrol between them.”
