Troublesome Conisborough Schoolboy

At the Doncaster West Riding Court on Tuesday, Cyril Lunn (13), New Conisborough was summoned for trespassing on the railway at Conisborough

Inspector Hall, appearing on behalf of the Company, said the lad in company with another about his own age, were charged with stealing coal from the railway in 1913.

Later they were again before the magistrate who sent the other boy to an industrial school, and told him he would be treated in the same manner if he came again. He behaved  himself for a time, but he had now reverted to his old pranks. He was continually on the Conisbrough Station, pulling labels from the trucks, annoying passengers et cetera

Charles Peters, the stationmaster, said the boy was the ringleader of a gang of lads who were a perfect nuisance to the station. He had tried every means to get the lad away but without avail, getting up to all kinds of mischief. He emptied the fire buckets and dragged passenger’s luggage away. Once when he had released the lad out of the station he peppered the station with stones.

The father of the lad said he had tried every means to correct him. He had thrashed him until he was afraid of being prosecuted and actually caused weals that remained for a fortnight. There was not a nicer lad in the house; he was like an angel and always ready to help with the housework. He had been several times to try to get him from the station, but he was “like an eel.”

The case was adjourned until Saturday.
