Two Years Of “Afternoons”
Denaby Miner “Enjoyed It”
After nearly 40 years as a pit worker, Mr Harry Walker, of 101, Annerley Street, Denaby Main, has retired. Mr Walker worked for two years without a brake on an afternoon shift. “And they enjoyed it without striking,” he says.
Sixty nine-year-old Mr Walker, a well-known Denaby old footballer, has worked at Kiveton Park Colony, Thurcroft Main, Manvers main, Denaby Main and Cadeby.
“I worked for two years and afternoons and had to take the rough with the smooth,” he said, “and without any strikes.”
He retired from Cadeby colliery after been there nearly 13 years. As a footballer he played for Worksop Town, Chelsea, Chesterfield, Rotherham Town and Mexborough.
During the First World War he served with the South Wales borderers in the near East.
