Unhappy Matrimonial Alliance
Patrick Donnellan, miner, Conisbrough, was summoned for an aggravated assault on Ellen Donnellan, on the second inst and for persistent cruelty.
The man did not appear.
The woman exhibited an arm which was almost a mass of bruises, the result of blows said to have been given when her husband was worse for drink, and the cruelty was said to have been regularly committed during the intemperate moods of the man. He not only exercised violence to the woman, but to the house furniture, with the result that comparatively little remained.
The woman said her husband gave her no money. She had lodgers in the house.
Sergeant Brown and neighbours having given evidence, the magistrates granted a separation order, ordering the man to contribute 10s a week to his wife’s maintenance. He was sent to prison for one month for the assault .
