United Front Conference

A conference of the Conisborough, Denaby and Edlington “United Front” was held in the Conisborough Council Offices on Saturday, Coun. J. T. E. Collins, of Conisborough, presiding.

The Chairman said the purpose of the conference was to get unity among the working classes in the district in an attempt to secure the complete withdrawal of the Unemployment Bill. A Provisional Committee had been elected at Denaby recently. The “United Front” movement was representative of trade unions, Labour parties, Communists, the unemployed workers, ex-Service men’s associations, and working men’s clubs. Any organisation which had workers within its ranks was eligible. Thirty-two organisations had been circularised, but only ten were represented.

The chairman added that the Bill was an attempt to introduce Fascism. Mr. Collins, having to leave the conference, Coun. W. McCullen, of Edlington, took the chair.

The organisations represented at the Conference were the Conisboro and Conisborough British Legion, Denaby Communist Party, National Unemployed Workers’ Movement (Conisborough and Denaby), Socialist League (Edlington), Conisborough Urban Council, Denaby Clarion Cycling Club, Denaby British Legion, Denaby Unemployed Social Association, Edlington T.U.C. Unemployed Association, and Conisborough Labour Party (Women’s Section).

The Conference passed a resolution demanding the withdrawal of the charges of sedition against Mr. Tom Mann and Mr. Harry Pollitt; and the withdrawal of the Unemployment Bill and the Sedition Bill.

The Conference decided to hold a public meeting on May 1st.
