Mexborough Swinton Times December 21, 1936

Here are some interesting facts and statistics culled from the annual report of the Conisborough Urban District, a storehouse of knowledge for ratepayers and a credit to all who aided in its compilation. Those who desire more detail will find it in the full report, a copy of which was sent to Conisborough and Denaby libraries

Population

Conisborough’s area is 1593 acres. Its population at the 1931 census was 18,174, and its last midyear estimate was 17,620 in 1935.

Electorate and Rate

There are 9,604 parliamentary electors, and 7,617 local government voters. The rateable value is £55,124 and the product of a Penny rate is £206. The current rate is 18 shillings and of this 10s 7d goes the County council, 5 ¼ d to the joint burial committee, 8 ¾ d to the joint hospital board, ½ to the assessment committee and 6s 2 1/2d for UDC general expenses.

Schools

Since reorganisation there are 3,700 school places and the total scholars in attendance in September was 3,467 with an average attendance of 3,082. Some 873 children were certified for free milk in March 1936.

Wards

One can judge the size of the wards by the number of electors living in them. In Denaby there are 1520 parliamentary and 1199 local government; in East 1824 1397; in North 1583 and want to 69; in South 3072 and 2476; and in West 1606 and 1282.

Swimming Baths

The Swimming Baths were a gift from the Miners Welfare Trustees in 1930, and attracted in the season ending October 1936 just over 25,000 attenders, of which 15,156 were ordinary users, 838 had season tickets and approximately 9,400 were scholars. Ordinary users are shown a steady decrease from 28,887 in 1933. Season tickets were at the peak in 1934 when there were 1129 issued. The figures for schoolchildren show increased interest. They are 1933 2,479; 1930 4,545; 1935 10 ,208 and 1936 9,400 approximately. Expenditure on the baths since last year was £750 and income was 464, leaving £295 as the net cost to the rates.
