Mrs Vernon has received the following letter from Sgt Pryor:

Dear Madam,

I take myself the fearful duty of answering your last letter to your brave and late husband. Please accept mine and all his comrades sympathy to you and family, and it is our desire that you should think of him as a normal man who bravely did his duty.

Herewith a few details, which I am not allowed to write more fully. On the morning of 30 April the enemy bombarded our lines. It was terrific while it lasted. Unfortunately a shell burst quite close to where your husband stood to arms. The shock of the explosion stupefied your husband, and when his gallant comrades went to his assistance he was at rest.
