Vestry Meeting at Conisborough – New Burial Site

On Friday night, under the presidency of the vicar, the Rev. J. G. Wood, M.A., a parish meeting was held at Conisborough to take into consideration the choosing of a site for a cemetery, Burial Board having become absolutely necessary through the stale of the churchyard, which is overcrowded.

In recent interments the remains previously interred persons have been disturbed and disclosed.

A statement was read from the Burial Board pointing out that considerable difficulties had been encountered in the selection of suitable site on account of the prevalence of rocks and springs.

A central and very desirable piece of ground near tbc railway station, belonging to Mr. Montagu, could not be secured, on account it being reserved for building operations.

The board had, however, approved of site belonging to Mr. Waterhouse, of Sheffield, but £200 an acre was asked for it, with a reservation of the minerals.

After further deliberation board recommended site on the Rotherham turnpike road, some 4a. 3r. 33p which could be obtained at £100 an acre. It was some distance from the centre of the village. It was stated inspector from the Home Office 1 would finally approve the ground.

On the motion of Mr. H. Booth, seconded by Mr. J. Gibson, this site was finally approved, and a discussion ensued to the borrowing the money for the purpose. Mr. F. E. Nicholson, clerk to the Burial Board, observed that it could be borrowed for a term of 30 years.
