Violent Assault

June 1884

York Herald – Monday 23 June 1884

Doncaster – West Riding Police (Continued)

Luke Hunter, Geo. Huston, Thos. Kelley, and Jno. Coulam, all of Conisbro’, were summoned for violently assaulting Wardrobe Hudson, also of Conisbro’.

On the 10th ult. the parties were at a pigeon shooting match, and afterwards at the Alma Inn. Here a few words ensued, and Hunter and Kelley struck the complainant, and then kicked him. Hudson got into the street, when all the men set upon him, knocked him down, struck him, and kicked him until he was almost senseless. He got up and tried to run away, but Kelly overtook him and gave him a last kick. Hudson was carried home, and had been under Dr. Hille ever since.

After hearing the evidence, the solicitor for the defendants agreed to give the complainant £7 10s., including doctor’s charges and all court costs, and on this the solicitor for the complainant agreed to withdraw the charges. The magistrates very reluctantly consented, and warned the defendants as to their future conduct.
