Walter McArthur was a wing half who joined Bristol Rovers from Goldthorpe United in February 1933.
He spent his entire career at Rovers, making a total of 261 appearances in The Football League, scoring 14 times, but would have played far more games had it not been for the Second World War interrupting his career.
Wally had started playing football in 1930 with his home town club Denaby United, and from there had joined Goldthorpe.
His playing days ended in 1950 on his retirement, but he stayed in the game and was appointed The Pirates’ assistant trainer. In 1962 he became the club’s trainer, and he continued living in Bristol until his death on 10 September 1980.
His entire playing career with Rovers was spent in Division Three (South), but the club won the league title and promotion to Division Two in 1953 while he was assistant trainer.
In all he spent over 30 years with the club.
