Water Supply

Old Denaby Call for Action

Old Denaby is calling for definite action in the subject of its water supply. At last week’s meeting of Doncaster Rural Council it was reported that the medical officer’s report would be ready for the next meeting of the sanitary committee.

Mr G. O. Randerson (who represents Denaby and the council), said it was time the council took definite action. It had been necessary to apply for permission for the Colliery supply to be used at eight houses and there was evidence that more wells were drying up.

Cost should not count, said Mr. Randerson, when the needs of the ratepayers were concerned. The parish was actually in a worse state now than it was 2 ½ years ago. He was anxious that something should be done between now and the receipt of Medical Officers report.

Mrs. Tait (Edlington) said it was a crying shame that one parish should be in such great need when the rural area as a whole had such adequate supplies available.

Mr. T. L. Soar (chairman of the Doncaster and Tickhill joint water board), said that two schemes have been prepared, but both were too expensive for the parish of Denaby. One would cost £3,000 arid the other £1,700. and it was not fair that the whole of the rural area should be called upon to meet the expense.

Mr. Randerson said when he went to live at old Denaby there were adequate supplies of water. But they had suffered several years of drought and also colliery subsidence. In his opinion, Mr. Soar had influenced the water board against carrying out the scheme. He regretted having to say it, but he believed it was true. They had paid their rate in aid ever since the inception of the water board.

Mr. Soar: So has everybody else.

Mr. Randerson: Exactly, and we claim consideration.

At a meeting of the Review of County Districts subcommittee it was reported that deputation had been received from the Swinton Urban Council to hear their proposals regarding the inclusion of part of the parish of Adwick and Dearne in the Swinton Urban area and they were informed that as their proposals did not include the whole of the parish and were not in opposition to the original observations made to the county council by the local council they would offer no opposition.

At the proposition of Mrs. Tait it was decided that the surveyor should prepare a scheme for submission with the medical officers report at the next meeting of the sanitary committee.
