Week End Drunks
Owen Battle, collier, New Conisborough, admitted being drunk and disorderly there, on Saturday, and was find 7s 6d and 7s 6d costs.
Arthur Dale, collier, Conisborough who had been convicted four times, was fined 7s 6d and costs for being drunk and disorderly on Saturday.
John Wharton, labourer, no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly at Mexborough on Sunday. Whilst the magistrates were consulting prisoner exclaimed: Look here, I want to speak to you when you are done looking at that paper.
The Chairman: What do you want to say?
Prisoner: Is that man (Constable Hurst) allowed to hit a man with a stick and shove his thumb into your throat when you’re asleep?
PC Hurst was called, and stated that he did not hit the prisoner at all.
Prisoner: I should think you did assault me, but you see, he has got the best of the case here. He hit me first. Look here (pointing to a red mark on his throat).
The officer denied that he assaulted the prisoner.
Prisoner: Speak the truth and shame the devil. My word is as good as his. It ought to be before the Justices.
Prisoner was fined 5s and 6s 6d costs.
Michael Mack, collier, New Conisborough, was fined 10 shillings and costs for being drunk and disorderly on the eighth instant.
