Wheelbarrow Race
If you happen to be around the Alma Inn, Conisbrough, on Monday at about 11.30 a.m. don’t be surprised to see half-a-dozen or so wood-be athletes pushing and blowing as they wheel barrows with men in them up to the pub and dash in for a quick half. It will be the finish of Conisbrough’s wheelbarrow race which has attracted big crowds on Bank Holiday Monday for the past two years and is expected to do so again this year.
The race starts on Park Road 10.30 a.m. and contestants have to call at the Talisman, Bowman, Lord Conyers, Ivanhoe Club, Fox, Eagle and on to the Alma, calling for a drink at each pub. Partners are allowed to change over at any time and for the winner there will be a prize waiting. Last year the fun and games ended with a victory for the Conisbrough boys, Stan and Wilf Rigby.
In the afternoon the Alma will hold a “Miss Conisbrough” competition, and defending the title she won last year will be Mrs. Elsie Hoyle. Entries for both events can be accepted up to half-an-hour before the start.
A collection will be taken for the Conisbrough and Denaby Meals on Wheels Service.
