Where is the Post Office?
This was the general cry in Conisborough Friday evening last. It was very amusing to see the people running -about seeking this office..
That evening I had a letter to post, and of course I made my way to the usualplace, Mr. Turnbull’s; but I found the box made up.
A youth who was standing by said the Post. Office was now at Mr. Sargentsons near the Eagle and. Child Inn. To there I then went. Wrong again!
I was then informed it was in Church Street, at the house Dr. Craik used to occupy so I wended my way into Church Street. Here I foundstuck on the top of a wall the sign.
“Conisborough.Post Office.”
Passing- through the yard doors, I came across a piece of timber, on which were the words “To the Post Office,” scrawled with a piece of chalk. One end of this timber was embellished with a hieroglyphic which I suppose represented a hand.
Passing on through the gateway into the front garden I at last came up to the object of my search, the letter box. This consisted of an old box, marked. “Temporary Letter .Box,” which was stuck in one of the front- windows, and into this I deposited my precious missive.
Now I wonder who selected this as a, likely, place for a post office? A more unlikely place I don’t think you could find in all Conisborough.
