Whitsuntide at Conisborough.

June 1892

Whitsuntide at Conisborough.

It is gratifying to know that Conisborough has not yet lost its charms. The number of visitors has been much larger than usual this week, and there is reason to believe they have felt well repaid for the trouble in making use of the excursions to this old historic village.

The crags smiled most affably, thanks to the heavenly orb, and the winding walks were “alive” with couples “whispering words of love.” And how attractive the water was. All the boats available were in requisition and the sight on the placid bosom of the Don was enchanting.

From the “landing stage” to Sprotborough is a fine stretch of water for a row, with the picturesque, sloping fields and wooden heights on either side. Notwithstanding the so-called “onward march of civilization” as testified by the sinking of the Cadeby Colliery; I hope it will never result in the beautiful valley between Conisborough and Doncaster being marred by belching smoke and coal dust.
