He was 23 and single, and was mobilised at the outbreak of war with the special reserve.

He was wounded in January 1915, and returned to France in July 1915.

He was 3 times in action on the Somme and was killed during its third engagement in that sector.

His brother, Company Sergeant Major F.Widdowson, who is with the K.O.Y.L.I. in France, sends usthe following elegy:

Somewhere in France there is a grave
Where lies my brother mid the brave
A cross doth mark his resting place
Too soon, alas! Time will efface;
To thee, oh God, I lift my prayer,
And leave him sleeping in Thy care
His war is o’er, his sun is set
My brother thee I’ll ne’er forget
How bravely answered´st thou the call,
For King and country gave thy all;
Now all is over thou´st done thy best,
God grant thee His eternal rest
