Conisborough Notes

Woman Organist

A fortnight ago I mentioned the appointment of Mrs. W. Burton as organist at St. Peter’s Church, and said that according to the Pariah Church records she was the first woman organist to be appointed.

That statement was quite correct according to the records, but it has been brought to my notice that for a period of three years, long ago, there was a woman organist.

The exact years are uncertain, but the duties were performed by Miss Jane Harrison, who was born 92 years ago in West Street, in the house attached to the newsagent’s business still carried on by one of the family, Miss F. Harrison.

For her services Miss Harrison received a gold watch.

This Miss Harrison became. Mrs. Curtis and went to America. where she enhanced her musical reputation, and at the age of 89 played before a large and appreciative audience in America.

I am indebted to her son, now touring Europe, for the information.
