Women’s Champion

Iris Hoult, 4, Dearne Street, Conisbrough won the women’s national half-mile grass track championship at Harworth on Saturday. Iris (18) is a member of Dearne Wheelers attached to Hickleton Main Colliery Welfare Scheme and has been in special training for this national honour, which comes to the district for the first time.

Twenty-two riders from all part of country took part, including the 1950 title holder (P Byrne, Coventry C.C.) and Iris took the race comfortably by five yards from a Birmingham rider in one minute 14.8 seconds.

Iris has had many successes during the present season and her latest triumph was acclaimed by the large crowd who saw her presented with the N.C.U. championship jersey and medal.

The Colliery Welfare, whose membership incudes some of the foremost riders in the country, are contemplating considerable ground improvements for next year’s cycling events.

Ron. Holmes, also a well-known rider of the Wheelers, recently won the North Derbyshire and South Yorkshire Centre one-mile championship.
