Wonderful Day at Conisbrough
Ambitious Programme
Delights Big Holiday Crowd
Three thousand sun-soaked people went home satisfied from Conisbrough Show on Saturday. They had seen star cyclists and fine displays of horsemanship from riders of all ages; they had consumed record quantities of ice cream, pop and crisps, and had tried their luck in competitions with prizes ranging from a brand-new 98 c.c. motor cycle to bottles of rum, whisky and gin.
In the Saddle
Travelling back to Manchester, the Bardsley brothers felt their journey had been worthwhile. With them went two first prizes and one second prize, earned by hard riding in the closely-contested cycling events. On her way back to Wath Miss Jose Davis felt even happier. Cap-less and jacket-less, with dark curls flying, she had romped home first in four of the gymkhana events and second in yet another. A pupil of Wath Grammar School, Jose is not yet 16. She rode her first pony when she was four.
Members and officials of Conisbrough and Denaby Agricultural and Horticultural Society had every reason to feel satisfied. In organising this, their fifth annual show they had introduced cycling and athletic events, made possible by a change of site from Conisbrough Welfare Ground to Butterbusk Farm. These proved popular innovations, drawing nearly 550 competitors and holding spectators enthralled throughout.
Brodsworth riders, in their green, orange and red jerseys supplied thrills galore one of them, F. Smith, coming first in the the half-mile cycle scratch, thus winning the Bird Cup, given this year by Mr. F. H. Bird.
The agricultural and horticultural classes reached their accustomed high standard. the Swift Cup for the best beast in the show being won by Mr. H. Bates (Cawthorne), the Fullerton Cup for the best agricultural horse by Mr. S. Brookes (Thorne), and the Silver Challenge Cup (given by Mr. A. W. Shikell for the champion pig exhibited by a Conisbrough and District Pig Club member) by Mr. G. Webb (Conanby). Mr. Fred Hopkinson’s1 Cup for the winner of the open I jumping competition was won by Mr. E. Makin (South Milford) on “Nomination.”
A 25-class dog show, organised by Conisbrough Canine Society in conjunction with the show and sports committee, drew an average entry, the Walton Cup for the best exhibit being won by Mrs. H. a Wright. Eight other cups were awarded, two of these going to Mrs Wright and two to Mr B Walker
