Conisbrough soldier killed Alex Wood
Mrs Wood, 35, Holywell Lane, Conisbrough, received a notification from the War Office last Friday, intimating that her husband Alex Wood, had been killed whilst in action in France. Wood was a reservist of the Durham light infantry. He had seen seven-years service in India.
Wood was well known in Conisbrough. He had worked for Mr S Whitefield and for Messrs Braime & Co., and up to his being called to duty and worked as a platelayer on the surface at Cadeby Pit.
He left Conisbrough on August 5 and was alternatively drafted to Newcastle, Lichfield, Scotland, Cambridge, and finally to Ostend. In a letter to his wife he stated that he had been six days and nights in the trenches, where he was wounded slightly in the face through being struck by the remnants of a shell. He has frequently written home, stating that he was getting on well.
Wood was only 28 years of age, and leaves a wife, baby six months old, and a little girl three years of age.
