Worksop  7  Denaby United  2

At Worksop, before 800 spectators, Cole, for Worksop, was successful in winning the toss, and set the visitors to kick towards the Avenue goal, with a blazing sun in their faces. Early on Dyall and Roper negotiated a pretty run between them, and Roper tested Green with a beauty, which he cleared just in the nick of time.

Worksop took up the attack, Millington, Dunney and Eyre each taking turns in turn. The game had only been in progress about ten minutes when Hancock muffed the ball, and it ran to Millington, who scored a very easy goal. Coming again, Nelson missed an open goal, but he made amends a few minutes later by scoring cleverly from a long pass by Cole, as the result of good forward work. Both teams playing up to a good pace.

Heal was playing a fine game at back, and repeatedly broke up the combination of Chadfield, Froggatt and Holmes. Eyre found the net again, but was given off-side. Worksop were having the best of the exchanges, and Copestake, Brown and Ives gave a fine exhibition at half back, and a long dropping shot, which went a trifle wide.

Nelson effected a very pretty run, and transferred to Millington, who missed the mark close in, when the goal appeared at his mercy. Denaby got away again, but nothing came of the movement. A long shot by Dyall had the goalkeeper in trouble, but struck the side of the net. The same player equalising in a few minutes later.

The visitors were attacking strongly when the whistle blew for the interval with the score Worksop 2 goals, Denaby 0.

Within a minute of the resumption Dunney scored clumsily, and Chadfield forced the ball through. Denaby assumed the aggressive again, and Froggatt missed a ridiculously easy chance of equalising.

A beautiful centre by Eyre saw Nelson breast the ball in, but Hancock managed to scoop it out. A long shot by Peacock was cleverly disposed of by Hancock. Worksop were awarded a penalty kick, from which Peacock scored.

Bunney next found the net with a beauty, but was given off-side. Coming again, Eyre placed the home team further ahead with a well-timed shot. The visitors’ forwards went across, but off-side spoilt matters.

At the other end Bunney found the net again from a pretty pass by Millington, and a minute later the last-named scored again. Worksop were now all over their opponents, and Eyre added goal No. 7. Bunney found the net again, only to be ruled off-side.

Just before the call of time Denaby went across, and Holmes beat Green.
