Abandoned With Denaby on Top

Hallam 0, Denaby United 2

Denaby United continued their recent revival on Saturday with a fine all round team display at Hallam, but, despite their efforts, and a two goal command, there is still some doubt whether they will get the two points they so richly deserve.

The referee called a halt to the proceedings with 15 minutes to go, and at that time no-one, not even the Denaby players, crumbled at the release from the elements. A gale force wind and sleet made conditions unbearable.

But Denaby had already done more than enough to secure the rewards they were completely in charge throughout the first half and although Hallam came more into the game after the re-start they rarely looked menacing

The game was only ten minutes old when Denaby pulled ahead. Whittaker put Gilbert away down the right. The winger cut the ball back into the path of Keith Roddis who unleashed a tremendous drive across the face of the goal and into the corner of the net.

NO MISTAKE

Denaby, playing attractive open football under the conditions increased their lead after 30 minutes. Whittaker, their live-wire inside left, was, again the schemer. He cleverly beat the full back before crossing to Morley, who made no mistake from just inside the “box.”

Whittaker was unlucky just on half time when a terrific 20 yards’ shot hit the inside of the post and rebounded into play, to be scrambled away.

During the Second half Denaby, with the wind and sleet beating straight into their faces allowed Hallam more of the ball, but the home side showed little imagination up front and were always susceptible to Denaby’s breakaway attacks.

The match will he referred to the Yorkshire League, ,who will decide what action will be taken —whether or not Denaby will be allowed the points or whether a replay will have to be called
