Yorkshire player at Conisbrough
Yorkshire
cricket star John Hampshire had plenty of practice signing autographs when he visited Conisbrough on Saturday.
A crowd of eager young fans gathered outside the Talisman public house in Chestnut Grove wher John was to make the draw and presentation of a competition organised by Basil Robinson in aid of the Royal National Institute of the Blind.
The prize was acricket bat bearing the autographs not only of John but also of the Yorkshire, Lancashire, Leicestershire and Essex county sides and the English and South African national teams.
Although the hotel was crowded for the occasion, the owner of the winning ticket – number 047005 – was not present to claim his award.
Among the guests was Mr. Walker, of Sheffield area organiser of the R.N.I.B. who was pleased to hear that the competition has raised about £17 for his organisation.
Also during the evening Mr Hampshire added the finishing touches to another of the Talisman’s charitable efforts, by pushing over a three to four feet high pile of pennies, donated by customers in aid of the spastics.
The count has not yet been made but it is estimated that around £30 worth of coins toppled at the hands of one of the county´s most promising players.
