Your New Councillors

Five new urban councillors were elected in this part of South Yorkshire on Saturday. In other cases the retiring councillors were re-elected.

The new councillors are:

James Wootton (Lab. Mexborough North):

 A checkweighman in Hajgh Moor seam at Manvers Main Colliery for six years. Has been nominated for the Council three times by the Colliery branch of the N.U.M. Was co-opted a member of Mexborough Labour group two years ago and has served on the Aged and Infirm Committee at Manvers Main for 18 months

Formerly on the Checkweigh Committee at the Colliery.

Mr. Edgar Beeson (Ind., Conisbrough East):

Elected to the Council at his first attempt. Vice-chairman of Conisbrough branch .of the Dearne Valley Conservative Association

Now stores manager at Pianet Trading Company, Doncaster, formerly with Messrs. Hodgson and Hepworth Ltd., Doncaster. Member of Rotherham Golf Club. War-time street savings group secretary at Conisbrough

Mr. James Prendergast (Lab., Conisbrough, Denaby Ward):

Unopposed in his first election campaign. For past three years financial secretary of Conisbrough and Denaby Central Labour Party. Has been employed at Cadeby Colliery for 24 years and served at one time on N.U.M. branch committee. Delegate from Cadeby branch to Mexborough Trades Council.

Mr. Joseph Clarkson (Lab., Swinton, Park) :

Forty-seven-years old railway electrician. Has been member of N.U.R. over 20 years. Born at Liverpool and has resided in Swinton 15 years. His first attempt at Council honours.,

Mr Ernest Metcalfe (Lab., Swinton, Central) :

Aged 48. First attempt for Council membership. Keen, supporter of Labour movement. A. native of Swinton, and formerly resided in Albert Road. Coalface worker at Manvers Main Colliery, where he has been employed for many years. Mr. Metcalf has two daughters and a son, all living at home. Now resides at 8, Bower Road, Swinton.
