Youth Injured in Ballroom Fracas.

A stranger saved a 16 years oldConisbrouygh Youthfrom a more serious injury when he was kicked and beaten up during a Christmas dance at a Mexborough ballroom.

Martin Wilkinson, of 23 Athelstane Road, Conisbrough, had gone to an all-night dance at the Empress Ballroom with friends and incident occurred in the early hours of Boxing Day.

It was sparked off by a comment made by Martin, the son of a Cadeby miner, Mr G.M.Wilkinson, after a an argument between one of his pals and another youth. The youth took exception to the remark and told Martin, “You’re mine at four o’clock.”

Said Martin on Wednesday, I wasn’t going to wait around for that. “It was after midnight and I went downstairs to the cloakroom to collect my coat. As I was coming out of the cloakroom there were five youths waiting at the door. I passed two of them before they grabbed me and started kicking and punching me.”

Intervened.

At that point the stranger came down the stairs and broke up the fight. “If it hadnĀ“t been for that chap coming down I don’t know what would have happened,” said Martin. “He told me that he was new to Mexborough, and I never found out his name.”

The stranger was the only person to come to his aid. Although there were other people standing around,” he commented.

An ambulance was called and after an examination at Mexborough Montagu hospital, Martin was allowed home suffering from nothing worse than bruised ribs.

Martin refused to identify the use concerned and he will now be doing is dancing in Doncaster.
