Youths Break a Shop Window at Denaby.

At Doncaster to-day, Albion, George Maugham, and Richard Riley, pony drivers. New Conisborough, were summoned for wilful damage a window in the shop occupied by Ernest Bottrill, general dealer.

A story of unaccountable hostility of youths in the neighbourhood to the complainant was told. Complainant said that on Wednesday week, about half past six o’clock in the evening, he was returning from his shop when met the three defendants.

When he had passed them they threw stones at him. Arriving his shop he found it surrounded by a crowd of other youths. His shop window and several sweet bottles in it were smashed. This kind of thing had going on for months.

John Button, assistant in the complainant’s shop, said that on the night in question he saw Ashlon throw stones which broke the window, whilst the other defendants behind him urged him on.

Nellie Day, a little girl, corroborated, and stated that she was struck one of the stones.

Sergeant Ramsey said knew the complainant’s shop had been the object of attack by youths in the neighbourhood for long time.

Ashton pleaded guilty to throwing the stones.

Maugham and Riley denied that they were and called witnesses. They were ordered to pay 1s. fine and 11s. 6d. costs each, also the damage 20s.
