January

January 1906 began with a fiery meeting of the Council over a disputed £10 promise
A Painter was electrocuted at Cadeby Colliery, a Wagon-Lowerer run over by Wagons and a Woman’s body found in the pond near the Bone Mills
Young Pony Drivers are prosecuted for ‘playing at hanging’ and young boys let off for stealing 4 pence of coal.
A Miner gets two month’s hard labour for stealing clothes and there are several cases of assault
including the Stationmaster at Conisborough, who describes it as the ‘worst station’ on the GCR system
A Conisbrough gentleman visits Egypt and sees Stromboli in eruption
and United continue their excellent season with victories at Worksop and Owlerton over Wednesday Reserve.

February

February 1906 was an absorbing month of stories in the District
There was a thrilling rescue at Cadeby as miners dug for their fellow workman
with no care for their own safety and with no knowledge of whether the victim was still alive
The incredible engineering feat of the Viaduct was well underway and we have full details and photographs
The battle for the Fullerton Hospital Funding becomes a war of words with Messrs W H Chambers and Buckingham Pope contributing
A young girl burns to death in a flannelette nightdress with no fireguard protection and we have another example of how women are treat in these times
There’s another assault upon the police and the assailant gets two months hard labour and another man steals a bicycle and he gets three months!
We follow the process of obtaining a beer off licence and the breaches of Colliery rules
and United record good wins including 10 against Gainsborough Trinity

March

In March 1906 we have a report on how the New Railway Bridge was built in a day
and another miner at Denaby Colliery is killed
There’s a gathering of 1,000 miners and officials in the Large Hall in the Rossington Street School as a Popular Under Manager leaves the district
There’s an unprovoked assault at New Conisborough, A boyish pastime at Conisborough,
a Foolish Outburst by a Conisborough man and Adulteration of Sweet Spirit of Nitre at Denaby.
Denaby United have a great month, winning the Sheffield Challenge Cup in front of 8,000 spectators and scoring 11 against Gresley Rovers
and we have pictures of star players, Laverly and Nimrod

April

In April 1906 another child succumbs to a death through burning
A Conisborough youth is found drowned after losing his job at Cadeby
One of the best supporters of Denaby United passing away at a match and dies
Leaving behind his widow and 10 children, all of whom were present at the funeral
A woman is taken in out of kindness at a Conisborough house only to find clothes missing the next day
A ” Wetter off” is prosecuted for crossing the railway after going to the “Big Drum” for liquor
We read the detailed going off of illegal street betting in Denaby and a landlord is fined for not keeping the 3 mile restriction, and a Newsagent is caught selling papers on a Sunday
United finish in seventh place in the Midland League and there’s good report as Lavery turns out for Leeds City against Chelsea

May 1906 brought some unpleasant stories
How a wandering toddler was killed by a train,
a young pony driver run over by tubs,
and a labourer dies when he falls 5 feet.
We read a first hand account of the San Francisco Earthquake
There’s breach of the peace stories by men who are ‘good friends’ and a extraordinary burglar who also steals a donkey
a farmer gets a heavy penalty for assault
and men fined for being drunk in charge of a child and for spitting on the court room floor!
The Denaby Main Rifle Club beat Sheffield and Dore and Robinson takes all 10 wickets for Denaby & Cadeby

June

In June 1906 there were five accidents in one day at Cadeby Main
Young colliers are fined for obstructing the footpath and playing bounce ball
while another young glasshand loses his job for stealing glass marbles
A Denaby Barber is charged with bigamy and committed to the assizes
and the Education Committee get upset at ‘Mexborough’s impertinence.’
The ninth Conisbrough Show is to be held on Park Road
and there’s an accident to a Conisbrough contractor when his horse runs amok
The Denaby St John Ambulance Corps are in Camp at Blackpool
and Denaby United collect their medals for winning the Sheffield Challenge Cup
Denaby and Cadeby have a successful month,apart from the feast Fixture at Elsecar

In July 1906 there was the Denaby scandal of a Bigamous Hairdresser
Caleb Kilner becomes a Magistrate
There’s pugilists and threats and the aftermath of the Feast as the papers announce the cause as – Drink!

In August 1906 there was a mass Demonstration when Bosdin Clarkson put up barricades through his property
The Friendly Societies put on an impressive parade and American Engineers are very impressed
upon their visit to Cadeby Colliery
Denaby’s Worst Village label is considered a thing of the past
and there’s a case of Unlawful Wounding at New Conisborough and Stealing Turnips by youngsters at Conisborough

September

September 1906 was one of the most sensational months of modern times witnessed in the district
The biggest story was the murder on Park Road by a Cadeby collier over a Conisbrough bookmaker and the story, ‘too sordid for words’, it revealed
There were three fatalities at the Collieries this month, including 15 year old and a 17 year old drivers, another miner breaks both legs in a serious accident and in Nova Scotia a 14 year old falls over a cliff
On the positive side a Boy’s Brigade is to be formed, Miner’s classes are a boon to local miners and the Horticultural Society holds its second annual show
Denaby United have an excellent month beating the reserve teams of Sheffield United, Barnsley and Bradford
Then to complete an astonishing month they are investigated over a wage’s scandal!

October

In October 1906 the trial of the Park Road Murderer was held in Doncaster with more of the events leading up to the deadly night revealed
There’s a wounding case at Denaby and a father receives 3 months hard labour for assaulting his 5 year old son
There’s a badly crushed foot for a 16 year old and fatal consequences for a 16 year old, with 7 pit corporal’s being fined £1 each as a consequence
The Right of Way case fails to reach a resolution in the Doncaster Court and the Parish Councillors have their usual bickering in the monthly meeting with comments of ‘Fathead,’ Bow Wow’ and ‘let’s play marbles’ made
United play out a 3 games epic with Doncaster Rovers beating them in the decider at Mexborough

November

In November 1906 we find out how 250 emigrants from Denaby to Canada are faring
And read another episode in the uproarious meetings of the Parish Council
There’s acclaim for the Orchestral Society in Denaby and another concert by the Shepherd’s society
A Conisborough glassblower has a fatal fall from a wagonette
And there’s cases of a husband’s cruelty, Denaby neighbours in a backyard conflict, 
threats to ‘Murphy’ the police, a man’s penchant for apples and another flannelette burning of two little children
United’s excellent start sees them with victories over Chesterfield and Bradford City Reserve and Doncaster Rovers First Team !
Until Forest Reserve lower their colours for the first time

December

December brought 1906 to the end of a tumultuous year
Dagnall’s trial was held at Leed’s Assizes as we hear more of the events leading to the murderous night on Park Road
The notorious flannelette nightdresses feature in the death of a 44 year old woman
And the eight year old son of a Denaby family of 10
A labourer is crushed by a Coal Train as he take a tin can for spring water
And 52 miners are suspended in the pit shaft for two hours
There’s more interesting cases of pit offences,
Damaging grass while playing at football
And a Milk Dealer in trouble with his horse and cart
There was three days of glistening snow creating a white world
And United have another strong month
As they beat Rotherham Town after starting with only 8 men !
