January

In January 1912 there is a narrow escape by Dataller’s
after a gas explosion at Cadeby Main
and a 17 year old boy fractured his skull and becomes another mining casualty
Colliery Cases are heard involving Pony cruelty, taking tubs down an incline
and possession of cigarettes
There is also warning to colliers who pay wages in a public house
A young woman commit suicide by drinking carbolic acid
and the judge condemns the poison laws
The theft of butter from a greengrocer
reveals another theft of fowls and a cockerel
and United remain rooted to the bottom of the Midland league

The first national coal strike looms in February 1912 and Denaby and Cadeby still lead the Hull Coal traffic league
The Co-operative Society obtained a beer off licence despite protests from the chief landowner and the Reresby Arms
The Conisborough Baths reach a further stage in approval and Mr Chambers declares his affection for Denaby Main at the ambulance dinner
The literary and debating Society hear an interesting lecture on “Superstitions” and the chief social event of the season, the Conisbrough Ball reaches its “majority”
A cruel Denaby hairdresser admits gambling problems and the court hears cases including, a deserter,climbing over Denaby crossing gates
A safety lamp tampering and a Denaby pit hand who mistakes Tar for Water
United manage a thrilling 10 goal draw with Wednesday reserves

March

The First National Coal Miner’s strike took place in March 1912, after a national ballot at all the collieries
750,000 miners Nationwide downed tools and Local firms had to follow with closures
Rumours of miners working at Cadeby caused men from other areas to arrive, and 8,000 to riot in ugly rushes from the Denaby Main Hotel to Cadeby Main
Police re acted with baton charges
The Courts hear cases including the Lock keeper and his “deceased friend” and the usual refusing to quit, pit pony offences, begging and fights
United recorded their first win since Christmas and remain bottom of the Midland League

The Great strike ended on Easter Tuesday in April 1912 and three days later the Titanic hit an iceberg with 1,500 lives lost, and a week later nearby Barnsley won the English Cup at Bramall Lane !
A seven year old boy is found dead in bed and Mrs Caleb Kilner, after 30 years an invalid, dies at Ivanhoe Lodge

Crowds gather in their thousands at Conisborough Castle over Easter, despite the shadow of the strike
United find better form with three victories in April, but remain Wooden Spoonists at bottom of the Midland League

In May 1912 the council made application to improve, by widening, Station Road and a Denaby woman lost control over cycle when confronted with cattle
A man, convicted of shooting a gamekeeper, returns to Conisboro’ after prison to face ostracism
The Court hear cases of mining offences, drunkenness,
including a Denaby youth who struck his mate with his safety lamp, two labourers who received prison sentences for sleeping out, wicked Conisbrough boys who threw stones at gas lamps,
and various people who were making firewood from a fence
Denaby United are to receive a ground next to the cricket field
making it suitable for Midland League Football
