January

There was a dramatic court case in January 1928 when a Conisborough Man and 3 others were involved
in a struggle involving firearms after being pursued by gamekeepers
Formed by the Denaby Vicar, The Church Players take to the stage in the Big Hall with 3 One Act plays
The Courts hear cases of Vagrancy, Shop Lifting and Straying Ponies and an abusive incident with a ‘Welfare’ Trustee
There are pebbles in the collection and Nancy Crawshaw’s crag is to be blown up
There’s flooding from Burcroft to Sprotbrough and ‘queer things’ floating down the river !
United’s best result is a 4-2 win over Mansfield Town

February

In February 1928 there were several fatal accidents
At Butterbusk a couple of typists walked along the railway tracks and didn’t see a train until it was too late
A Denaby boy was still missing after he fell into the river on a walk with his brother and friends
At Cadeby a youth is killed on the eve of his enlistment
A Conisborough man is in trouble for fraud at Southport and a Denaby wife is beaten and summons her husband but the case is dismissed as the Court decides the marriage is illegal
At the Welfare a waiter is sued heavily for serving drinks to policemen and the cost of the Welfare Baths comes under review
The new Ferry “Tashy” is launched and a widow is given a guinea after being sued by the Council !
At a Denaby boxing match the fight is stopped and both contestants are taken to hospital

March

In March 1928 the Council had a big debate over the Unemployment problem and the intransigent Doncaster Guardians
There was a major outbreak of Burglaries and Denaby Men are charged with the crimes after a Mexborough scuffle
A Denaby women dies after falling and suffocating  in the Snow and a youth dies after nine years with a broken back after a Pit Accident
United improve their Midland League position after some good results during the month
A Conisborough halfback is signed by Tottenham and we feature pictures of local players and their team’s results

April

In April 1928 Good Friday brought crowds to the Annual Fair
Footballers stood in silence to honour the death of Roy Kilner
The Medical Officers Annual Report informs us of the population, birth and death rates, small pox, TB and sanitation
There’s a new Lady Chairman of the U.D.C.
The Choirmaster leaves with complements from Church and School
A cow runs amok in Doncaster, a policeman is ordered out of a Denaby house and a shunter is almost cut in two when his pole gets caught
United end the season mid table and are to carry on in the Midland League as the colliery workmen agree to an extra halfpenny each per week

In May 1928 two suicides saddened the villages; A retired grocer suffering severe pain and a young 23 girl who was told she couldn’t stop out late and threw herself into the ‘cut’
A horse in a terrible state is put down and the owner fined
Denaby Church players present ‘Eliza comes to stay’
The St Alban’s procession draws complements and 300 elderly citizens are given tea at Denaby Welfare
Laurence Calvert V.C. visits the district unannounced and a miners leader addresses a Trade Union Conference at Denaby baths
United have a complete change of officials, Jack Barker is transferred to Derby and the cricket season begins at Tickhill square

In June 1928 The Rainbow Bridge was about to be changed and the Collieries were after their Rate Reduction
We hear of Denaby’s grand old ‘Darby and Joan’ and another elderly couple are married for ‘the company’
Several court cases hit the news with a house ransacked by a drunken youth,
Schoolboy thefts, a desertion, pilfered timber, a motor cyclist who didn’t stop,
an insurance agent who spent the money he’d collected and a Denaby Mother of 15, who slapped the headmaster’s face

a man has his back fractured at Kilner glass works and a workman dies after falling from the Rainbow Bridge
The Rainbow Bridge is under reconstruction and the Council debate “Foreign” Labour, streetlamps and the Civic Sunday
A Denaby Cottage Fire is suffered by two elderly resident, one of whom dies
The Sunday school trip to Cleethorpes sees a scholar left behind and we have notice of the Preservation of Wild Flowers
There’s an unpleasant surprise for Denaby Workers as the Barnsley Seam nears completion
Five young men are fined after a drunken escapade and a giant rock weighing over 200 tons is displaced at Conisborough Cliff
Denaby and Cadeby suffered their first defeat but beat local rivals Mexborough and there are two new players for Denaby United

In August 1928 the townships were shocked to learn that a former Conisborough girl and a Denaby Main miner
were involved in the Pitt Street horror, where a father ran amok to leave his oldest daughter decapitated
Two more Denaby miners receive custodial sentences after attacking a Mexborough man on pastures Road
A Denaby footballer is injured in a hit and run accident and Dr Forde’s wife becomes the Nursing Superintendent
The second Conisborough allotment society is a success and Denaby and Cadeby pit ponies win awards at the Maltby show
And football takes over from cricket with a good start from United

In September 1928 the Urban District Council debated bravery, conversions, buses, roads, fire engines and swimming
There was hope of improvement in trade at South Yorkshire pits and a new miners “Welfare” in Conisborough
An inquest confirmed a Powder worker had not been poisoned by TNT fumes and an ancient chapel was located between Cadeby Colliery and the old tunnel
The widening of the Warmsworth Road would not be complete in time for the Races
Balby Street school win the school championship at the swimming gala and a mirror has been erected at a dangerous corner near the Dale
A miner is sent for trial after neglecting his six children and United get off to good start with victories over Doncaster and Worksop and the double over Wath

In October 1928 Denaby and Cadeby collieries made application to work the Park Gate seam and the manager predicted that the Coal trade still had a bright future
The home carting committee plan to reduce the costs of delivering coal next year and Conisbrough U.D.C.  were at war with the press over a false news story
A memorial window was erected in Conisbrough Parish Church in memory of the Reverend WA Strawbridge
Canon Leteux celebrated 40 years as Denaby Catholic priest at a special gathering in the Large Hall
A crowd of 300 people are attracted to a Street Row at Denaby and a Conisbrough painter is accused of obtaining money by false pretences
We have a profile of James Hancock who was with Denaby United when it began, and is the current Secretary – manager
and United progress in the FA Cup with wins over Methley Perseverance and local rivals Mexborough

In November 1928 the 10th anniversary of Armistice Day brought large crowds to the annual parades
More bravery was shown by two Cadeby miners who rescued a drowning man from the Don

After an 18 day hearing the rent is decided between Denaby and Cadeby Main collieries and Lord Cromwell
A man dies after an operation for a pit injury and there is a dispute over a Fire Scene Rescue
The bells are peeled with 5,024 changes and Ancient Pottery is discovered at Firsby Farm
