Accident at Pit on Day of Marriage

November 1880

Mexborough and Swinton Times, November 5.

Accident.

On Monday morning, about four o’clock, a man named Richard Jones, who resides in the Pit Row, was seriously injured at the colliery.

The man was working on what is called the “night shift,” and, whilst engaged in packing, the roof came down and buried him.

He was extricated as quickly as possible, and Dr Sykes was soon in attendance.

We are pleased to learn that he is now doing well, and hopes are entertained of his speedy recovery.

The accident – as all accidents are – was specially ill timed as the young man was to be married the same day.
