Two Sent Off – Two Own Goals

Matlock Town 3 Denaby United 1

After a tame first half, the second period of Denaby’s away Midland league game at Matlock on Monday really exploded. Two players – Clifton (Denaby) and Boot (Matlock) – were sent off, there were two own goals and a penalty, to mention but a few of the incidents.

Denaby were rather unlucky to be a goal down at the interval because they had done as much as Matlock, but then followed this fantastic second half, and Denaby came off the worst.

Only Roebuck in the forward line really got to grips with the game, and his first-time shots, even if not on the target every time should have given a hint to his fellow forwards where their greatest chance of success lay.

The defence played well, but with such a weak attack, play fell too much on the defence, which sooner or later had to give.

The first real shot of the game, after 12 min came from Cox (Denaby), Bert Spittal, in the Matlock goal, and the ball well covered. Matlock were slow to take their chances but Roebuck gave the partisan Matlock crowd something to think about, when his `first-timerĀ“ from a centre from the right caught keeper Spittal by surprise and the Matlock man did well to save it.

In the 40th minute after some boring midfield play. Matlock went ahead when Delargy whom I made the best player on the field, headed home.

Just before half-time Denaby and a golden opportunity to equalise. Wharam this do Spittal out of his goal and slipped the ball inside, but a weak shot was stopped on the line by a defender.

Some Compensation.

Just 3 minutes of the second half had gone when Ainscough
stuck his foot out to a Saunders centre, and the ball was deflected into the Denaby goal. 5 minutes later Saunders
put through the Matlock goal, but made up for it aminute later when he scored another goal this time at the right end with a header from an Ireland corner.

Matlock centre forward Boot was sent off in the 63rd minute for a tackle on centre half Ainscough, when the ball was nowhere near him. This was the first time in his career that Boot had even had his name taken. This really hotted up the game. Delargy was brought down by Whant in the area, but Ireland shot well wide from the spot.

Confusion two minutes before time. Matlock’s right half Barker shot and scored. The referee gave the goal. Clifton, Denaby’s left half appealed strongly for offside, and the referee went to consult one of his linesman, disallowed the goal, and Clifton, was sent off for bad language.
