Cain, Hugh

1912

Hugh Cain

My Great Great Grandfather was Daniel Cain who was Irish. He lived in Denaby for around 10-20 years and died in Cliff View Denaby in 1904. He and his family are listed in your 1881 census.

One of his sons was Hugh Cain who lost an arm in the Cadeby Pit disaster and afterwards was given a job as “knocker upper” and would knock on the doors of miners to get them up for their shifts.

Hugh lived in Annerley Street, Denaby in 1901 and in 1904 was living in Tickhill Terrace, Conisbrough.

One of Daniel Cain’s sons was Patrick (my great grandfather) and he had a son named Daniel Cain who was married to Mary Ann Gaffney and they had two children. Apparently, Daniel went off to war in 1918 and died of pneumonia at camp before ever leaving England. His body was returned by train to the area and he was buried in Thrybergh.

I have zero photos of any of the Cain’s apart from my grandmother who was born in Hemsworth.

If anyone has ANY information I would be delighted to be informed.

Sincerely,

Martin Roberts
