April 1900

Mexborough and Swinton April 6.

Denaby Labourer’s Responsibility.

A farm labourer named Harry Ellis, 18 years, employed on a farm at Denaby, was ordered to pay two shillings a week towards the maintenance of the illegitimate child of Fanny Herrington, a servant girl, whose parents live at Tickhill.

The defendant denied the paternity of the child, though he admitted that he had been courting the girl.

The applicant told the magistrate that the baby was the “very picture” of the defendant.
