Denaby News Agents’ President Honoured
The services of Denaby newsagents, Mr. George Gibson, and the long standing ties of goodwill and co-operation between the Doncaster wholesale house of W. H. Smith and son and the Mexborough and district branch of the national federation of retail newsagents, booksellers and stationers, prompted a presentation made at the Danum hotel, Doncaster, yesterday (Thursday).
For 16 years president of the Mexborough branch of the federation,Mr. Gibson> of park road, Conisborough received an inscribed gavel and block from Messrs. Smith’s Doncaster house general manager Mr. E. H. Williamson, presented to the Mexborough branch “In recognition of the long service of George Gibson”.
Mr. Gibson who with his brother, Mr. Harry Gibson, of church walk, Denaby, runs a newsagents shop in Doncaster road, Denaby Main, told the “South Yorkshire Times” on Monday, “I consider this is a very nice gesture on their behalf and as president of the branch I shall be very pleased to accept the gavel and block, it will become a very useful thing to have in the future years.”
Mr. Gibson said he considered that the presentation was made to the branch and not to himself as an individual. “they seem to think we are a lively little branch and they have always been welcome at our functions” he said adding. This is kind of acknowledgement of that.”
Mr. Gibson has been a member of the association for over 40 years, and took over the office of president from his father, the late Mr. H. Gibson in 1947.
Mr. Williamson told our reporter this week that as well as being a recognition of Mr. Gibson’s service; the presentation would strengthen the connection between W. H. Smith’s Doncaster house and the Mexborough branch of the federation, ties which had grown up particularity since the Doncaster house became an independent unit of the firm over 50 years ago.
“It also a mark of appreciation for the good will which still exists between us.”he said
Also at the presentation were the secretary of the Mexborough branch, Mr R, Parkinson, branch members Messrs. D. Colough (swinton), R. Smith (Mexborough) H. Johnson (Denaby Main), Mr. Knowels (Conanby) and Doncaster house news manager, Mr. A. R. Tyler
