Torpedoed
Denaby driver saved
Driver Walter Harris, Denaby, R.F.A.
Driver Walter Harris of 45 Annerley Street, Denaby Main, has written home as follows:
“Well mother, I’ve left Egypt, and the vessel which took me was torpedoed. I was in the water eight hours, but I do not say where I am at present. You will guess by the papers it was on 23 October, and the vessel was struck at 9:20 a.m.. At 9.30 the vessel was taking the final plunge.
I left the ship just before she sank, and was picked up by a French torpedo boat about 8 p.m.. The Frenchman were exceedingly good two us; they gave us plenty of hot wine and tea to bring us round, and about 12 o’clock that night they transferred us to a French hospital ship.
I shall remember that day, for I was struggling for my life while Alf was getting married.”
