Hengist and Ambrosius

According to legend and the Medieval chronicler Geoffrey of Monmouth a massive battle was fought in the area between ‘Mersbeli’ (Mexborough) and ‘Burgh Konan’ (Conisbrough) in which the Roman-Briton Ambrousius Arialanus defeated and killed the Viking leader Hengist.

Conisbrough held a particular important position for much of the Anglo-Saxon and following Norman periods and much of the administrative side of the Anglo-Saxon/Viking period was directed from here.
